We arrived to the dermatologist's office to find a sheriff car parked out front. It turns out that the sheriff was kind of there for us. Some heated words were exchanged between my stepfather and the office secretary when he called requesting information on the way to my impromptu appointment. He wanted to get a better idea of what was going on, to prepare for whatever it was that we were walking into. As any concerned parent would, he asked for some answers, but a little act called HIPAA does not allow this information to be shared. We would all have to wait to speak to the doctor face-to-face.
Based on the thickness of the melanoma that the dermatologist removed, it was considered to be very serious and had most likely spread. We were advised to meet with a team of oncologists immediately. I couldn't believe that this was happening. They then gave me a thorough body check, removing a second area that came across as suspicious and was close to the original melanoma. I held it together best I could for the duration of the appointment, but I think it was when I walked out the front door of the office that I totally lost my sh*t. This was the kind of stuff you read in a Lurlene McDaniel novel, not something that happens to an average girl going about her own business at her average first job on what started out to be the most average day.
